Spring is Coming

Spring is coming. That’s what I keep hearing in my heart and while yes I know spring in the natural world will inevitably arrive based on the calendar that is not the spring that is blooming in my heart. Over and over again through metaphors and symbolism, I keep hearing the echoes of spring in the distance. When I first started Girls’ Night back in 2020 one of my early messages was “Let it Die” and in it we talked about what happens inside of a tree when it releases its leaves in the fall. Trees survive the winter because of the water they are able to retain once they release their leaves. That water then helps to produce the bloom in the Spring. Google it, I promise it will blow your mind.

But as the voice of Spring keeps playing in my mind, I can’t help but see the tree still bare in the dead of winter holding onto the water it will need once the cold breaks. That’s the heart posture and real life condition for many of you. Still standing in the dead of winter holding on to what you might need to make it to Spring. But have any of you noticed that leaves can still fall in the winter. I recently swept some leaves off my front porch. Trees are still shedding what they don’t need in preparation for the harvest.

Trees are still shedding what they don’t need in preparation for the harvest. Why aren’t we?

In Genesis 32 we see that Jacob was willing to lose it all when he wrestled with God. When Jacob was alone God was present. When Jacob was persistent God was gracious to not allow him to be killed by seeing Him. You see while they were still wrestling, the sun was about to come up but had the sun rose Jacob could have died because I’m pretty sure only Moses saw God and lived to tell about it. But then when Jacob requested to be blessed God not only changed his name but gave him a nation, not only gave him a nation but saved humanity by bringing Jesus through his bloodline.

Spring is coming. Jacob had to shed his entire identity and it’s important that we ask ourselves what needs to die in my life, in my heart, in my mind, and in my beliefs so that I am ready for spring.
